Review: Rogue Double Chocolate Stout by Jon Maule

Gear Review by Jon Maule ( ):

If you like beer (and we’re not talking Coors, Bud or any of their derivatives), you’ve probably had something from Rogue.  Dead Guy Ale seems to be one of their more popular beverages but they do make many others that are worth checking out.   I tend to think about beer along the lines of if I could only drink one beer for the rest of my life, would this work?  Most of Rogue's stuff doesn’t quite resonate with me in that fashion.  This one does.  Rather than type out all of the details, I stole this great summary from Beer Advocate

 Beer Advocate

As you can see in the pic below, they’ve changed the bottle up just a bit (and upped the alcohol content to 9.0% ABV  which garners three thumbs-up  )

I wish I’d taken a better picture of the pour but you can see the color…  DARKNESS!!!

This kind of Darkness

Not this

So we know that going off looks alone can get you in trouble but this beer REALLY has quite a few different Chocolatey tastes and the bulk of them come up front.  I’m not sure words will do it justice so I’ll stop here.

The finish was a bit underwhelming but only when you compare it to the initial taste sensation.

Like most stouts, this doesn’t have a ton of carbonation and it’s syrupy enough that I don’t see myself craving this mid-Summer but maybe…???

The Bottom Line

I really like this beer.  It’s expensive but it comes in a 750ml so you do get two good pours as opposed to one and a half with a typical bomber.  I will drink this again and you should give this a try.
