My Mt Evans Tale

July 23, 2011. A beautiful morning at the 9am start line for the Mt. Evans Hill climb (www.bicyclerace.com). The Cat 3 senior men group was 38 racers. The pace was way too fast for the first 8 miles. I stayed with the lead group of 20 or so for the first 10 miles. Then there was an acceleration that I could not match and was dropped. I was not happy at that moment.

As the elevation increased and miles passed, I was able to keep a good pace and picked up a few other stragglers. At the half way point I took another bottle and a gel pack. That energized me enough to drop my posse and manged to pass one more in the last kilometer. Out of the 38 racers I managed a 12th place finish.

  • Gain 7000 feet

  • Distance 28 miles

  • Time 2:16

I'm happy.
